Turn and Burn
The Development of Coal Mining and the Railways in the North East of England
Mike Leddra
The North East of England is arguably the centre for the development of coal mining techniques and the birth-place of steam locomotives and railways, two industries that worked hand-in-hand to feed an insatiable demand for coal during and after the industrial revolution.

The geology and geography of the area led to the combination of available coal (initially close to the surface) good river transportation to the coast and a growing market for coal-on both sides of the North Sea. This drove landed gentry, industrialists, and inventors, to develop new and more cost-effective ways of mining and transporting an ever increasing volume of coal to market.

Coal mining in the North East is a story of changing fortunes, power struggles, and the overcoming of increasingly difficult problems, as miners chased the coal further underground and dealt with disasters, it is this pure genius, and plain hard work, on which coal mining and the railways the world over are still based.

This book provides an illustrated historical guide of two industries that shaped not only the North East, but most of Great Britain during our industrial past. It also looks at the legacy left behind, a legacy which is rapidly becoming lost, forgotten, or deliberately obliterated. This is a story which will fascinate people not just from the North East, but across the country and enable them to appreciate our industrial heritage.

Mike Leddra worked as a cartographer before gaining a degree in geology and geography from King’s College, University of London, and a PhD in geology from University College, University of London. In 1993 he became a Senior Lecturer in Engineering and Environmental Geology at the University of Sunderland, where he also qualified as a secondary school geography teacher. He now runs his own education consultancy, Forefront Teaching Resources Ltd.
